Representing India in the Olympics is the ultimate aspiration for many athletes, and for Indian men’s hockey team forward, Abhishek, this dream is on the cusp of becoming a reality. With a commendable record of 74 matches for India, including prestigious events such as the Birmingham Commonwealth Games 2022, the FIH World Cup 2023, the FIH Pro League, and the recent Asian Games in China where India secured gold, Abhishek is well-acquainted with high-stakes scenarios.
Hailing from Sonepat, Haryana, Abhishek has harboured a fervent desire to represent India in the Olympics since the age of 14. “This is both a privilege and a responsibility that I take earnestly. I aim to perform at my best and bring pride to the entire nation,” he imparted. His family shares in his jubilation at his Olympic debut. “It’s truly surreal for them,” he elucidated. “Witnessing my ascent to this level is exhilarating for them. My brother, in particular, has always been my chief supporter.”
Despite the weight of major competitions such as the Olympics, Abhishek remains undeterred, asserting, “The pressure in significant tournaments does not daunt me or alter my approach. I simply strive to execute on the field.”
The Indian team recently completed a mental conditioning camp in Switzerland, an event Abhishek underscores the significance of. “After months of honing the physical aspect of the game, this camp is precisely what we required. The team has dedicated time to forge bonds both on and off the field, fortifying our camaraderie and honing our ability to navigate high-pressure situations,” he reflected.
In terms of role models, Abhishek draws inspiration from footballer Cristiano Ronaldo. “As a professional athlete, his mindset and approach to the game serve as motivation for me to play and train in a certain manner. Observing him has impelled me to surpass my limits and strive for eminence,” he conveyed.
With the Tokyo Olympics looming on the horizon, Abhishek’s thrill and resolve are palpable. “It is a dream actualized for me and a moment of immense pride to represent India at the Olympics,” he articulated.
India is poised to commence their campaign on July 27 as they face New Zealand in their inaugural pool B match. The entire nation will rally in support of Abhishek and the Indian men’s hockey team as they pursue further glory on the Olympic stage.
