It is with profound regret that we bid adieu to Norm Hewitt, the former All Blacks hooker who has passed away at the age of 55 after bravely battling motor neurone disease. Hewitt achieved international renown for his iconic haka stand-off with Richard Cockerill, a moment that has achieved legendary status in the world of rugby.
Throughout his tenure with the All Blacks, Hewitt participated in a total of nine tests from 1995 to 1998, including a memorable triumph over England at Old Trafford in 1997. He also distinguished himself in provincial competition, representing Hawke’s Bay, Southland, and Wellington, as well as making significant contributions to the Hurricanes in the early days of Super Rugby.
Off the field, Hewitt was a committed advocate for various causes, particularly in his role as a community activist. He was recognized for his involvement in mentoring young individuals, as well as his dedication to anti-violence programs and initiatives aimed at eradicating animal cruelty. In 2005, he even claimed top honors in the New Zealand edition of the television program Dancing with the Stars, alongside his professional partner, Carol-Ann Hickmore.
