South Africa’s national rugby team, the Springboks, is currently preparing for an upcoming Test match against Portugal. In preparation for this significant game, head coach Rassie Erasmus has opted to release 16 players from the training squad. The training squad has been reduced from 41 to 25, with two players remaining in Bloemfontein to provide injury cover for the match against Portugal. It is noteworthy that Franco Mostert has been excluded from the released player list due to an injury sustained during the Test against Ireland.
Erasmus expounded upon the decision, articulating, “We have a demanding Castle Lager Rugby Championship campaign coming up, and we’ve been in training camps and competition respectively since June, so we thought it would be beneficial to give the players who are not playing this weekend a proper break to regenerate.”
Looking forward to future matches, including back-to-back Tests against the Wallabies and games against New Zealand and Argentina, Erasmus emphasized the necessity of sensibly managing the players to ensure optimal performance on the field.
Despite only two players remaining in Bloemfontein, Erasmus pointed out that there is flexibility for additional cover if required. He expressed confidence in the squad’s ability to adapt to the situation and underscored the importance of making decisions that benefit the team as a whole.
