ParalympicsGB has recently announced the six talented athletes who will represent the nation in the Wheelchair tennis team at the Paris 2024 Paralympic Games. With less than 40 days remaining before the highly anticipated games commence, the squad comprises experienced veteran players and promising debutants.
Leading the team are standout athletes such as three-time Paralympic silver medallist Alfie Hewett and Rio 2016 men’s singles gold medallist Gordon Reid, who will be competing in both the men’s singles and doubles draws. Also included in the roster are seasoned Paralympians Lucy Shuker and Andy Lapthorne, who have both showcased their exceptional skills and prowess in previous international competitions.
Shuker, a three-time women’s doubles medallist, is set to make her fifth appearance at the Paralympic Games. Her historic achievements alongside Jordanne Whiley at London 2012 and Tokyo 2020 have solidified her status as a formidable player in the sports world. Meanwhile, Lapthorne is gearing up for his fourth Paralympic Games, driven by his previous successes including a quad singles silver medal at Rio 2016.
Excitement and pride resonate throughout the entire team, particularly for 19-year-old Ben Bartram, who expressed his enthusiasm for being part of the Paralympic Games for the first time, fuelled by his inspired journey since watching Hewett play in Rio 2016. Joining him in making his debut is Dahnon Ward, who, at only 19 years old, is poised to showcase his exceptional talent, having already gained recognition through his Junior Masters and US Open junior titles.
Looking ahead to the Paris 2024 Wheelchair tennis event, Head of the LTA’s Wheelchair Tennis Performance Pathway and Team Leader, Erik Koers, conveyed his excitement in announcing the team, emphasizing the blend of seasoned Paralympic Games veterans and promising debutants.
