These Badass Women Are Taking the Ice: Get to Know the Lucky Pucks

Hey there, sports fans! If you’re into South Florida sports, you’ve probably heard about the Florida Panthers hockey team and their amazing season. But guess what? There’s another hockey team in town that’s making waves and having a huge impact on South Florida culture. Say hello to the Lucky Pucks!

The Lucky Pucks is an awesome ice hockey club for women and girls of all ages, and they’re based right here in Fort Lauderdale. These ladies are no joke. They dominated the state championships at every level while the Panthers were battling it out for the Stanley Cup. And get this, the women over 40 even won the national championship! Talk about impressive.

Our friends Sherrilyn Cabrera and Alyssa Ramos got a chance to hang out with the Lucky Pucks and see what they’re all about. They joined the team for practice and even got a peek inside the locker room. Let me tell you, it was a quintessential South Florida scene, complete with bags of mangos up for grabs.

The Lucky Pucks owe it all to one incredible woman, Karen Ota-O’Brien, also known as K.O. She’s the co-founder of the team and a total badass. Sherrilyn and Alyssa sat down with K.O. on the latest episode of Sundial to chat about how the Lucky Pucks have changed the lives of women athletes, from young girls to hockey moms turned players who can’t get enough of the ice. You can check out their full interview right here.

In case you missed it, on a previous episode of Sundial, they had a chat with Zak Stern, the mastermind behind Zak the Baker in Wynwood. This guy is the king of artisanal bread in Miami. He shared some insights on Miami food and even inspired us to write poems about it. How cool is that?

If you want to catch Sundial, make sure to tune in to WLRN, 91.3 FM, Monday through Thursday at 1 p.m. You can also listen to the rebroadcast at 8 p.m. And don’t worry if you miss a show, you can find every episode of Sundial on your favorite podcast app, like Apple Podcasts, Stitcher, and Spotify.

So there you have it, folks. The Lucky Pucks are taking the ice by storm and showing everyone what they’re made of. These women are true athletes and an inspiration to us all. Keep an eye on them because they’re just getting started. Go Lucky Pucks!
