Colorado Extreme Hockey Expands with New Ice Rink in Rifle

Get your pucks: Colorado Extreme Hockey expands with Rifle ice rink

The city of Rifle, historically known for rodeos and other attractions, is about to get a taste of hockey. Colorado Extreme Hockey is bringing an oval ice rink to the Garfield County Fairgrounds, set to open by Thanksgiving.

Sheldon Wolitski, the mastermind behind Colorado Extreme Hockey, revealed that the rink’s inaugural season will focus on recreational hockey and open skating for the public. While the club currently has six coaches, they are actively seeking local talent to join their ranks as they expand to the Rifle area.

But Colorado Extreme Hockey is more than just a game. Since its inception, the club has provided 300 free hockey bags filled with gear to aspiring players. They even have two trailers packed with equipment, ready to distribute to young enthusiasts.

The Rifle region is not familiar with ice sports, but Wolitski believes the new rink could attract up to 400 new skaters, many of whom will be experiencing hockey for the first time.

Alesha Marrow, a local parent and coach, understands the impact the rink will have on the community. She knows that it’s not easy for Rifle families to travel to Carbondale during the winter months, leaving their kids with nothing to do. The new rink will not only introduce a new sport but also foster community involvement.

Eight-year-old Aike Hansen, Marrow’s son, is eagerly awaiting the rink’s opening. He’s excited to meet new people and play hockey, especially since some of his friends want to join but can’t afford the gas to travel to Carbondale.

Wolitski’s passion for expanding winter sports in Rifle stems from his own upbringing. He grew up with ice rinks everywhere and saw the need for winter sports in the area. While there are plans to potentially form a dedicated team in Rifle in the future, Wolitski’s main focus right now is growing the game and providing opportunities for young athletes.
