Hey there! Are you ready to get involved in the exciting world of rugby? Well, you’re in luck because the Newcastle Falcons are bringing the game to schools and colleges through their awesome initiative called Project Rugby. This program, organized by Premiership Rugby and England Rugby, aims to get more people from under-represented groups playing the sport.
Who are these under-represented groups, you ask? Well, we’re talking about ethnically diverse communities, folks from lower socio-economic backgrounds, and disabled individuals. Project Rugby wants to give everyone a chance to experience the thrill of the game and hopefully get them hooked!
The main goal of Project Rugby is to introduce students to the sport and encourage them to join local rugby clubs. The Falcons’ community development officers have been hard at work this term, visiting schools like Kingsmeadow, Peterlee, Newburn, and South Tyneside College. They’ve been teaching the kids all about the game, from the basic skills to the more complex rules.
One of the community development officers, Stephen Parsons, has been working with the students at Kingsmeadow. He’s been blown away by how well the girls have taken to the sport. They’ve been tackling opponents like pros and have really embraced the physicality of the game. Safety is always a top priority, and Stephen has made sure the girls understand the importance of proper technique and following the rules.
