Hey golf enthusiasts! Let’s talk about Tyler Weaver and his incredible journey in the 2023 season. We’ve been following his achievements with great enjoyment, and boy, has he made us proud! After finishing his A-Levels and bidding farewell to Culford School, Tyler has embarked on his collegiate studies at Florida State University. Talk about a bright future ahead! Although he narrowly missed out on a spot in the GB & Ireland team for The Walker Cup, he was selected to represent England Golf in the World Amateur Team Golf Championships held in Abu Dhabi. This prestigious event saw 36 countries and a total of 108 players competing. Now, let’s dive into Tyler’s performance. In the first round, he got off to a fantastic start, scoring an impressive 4-under-par 68. With just one bogey at the 15th hole, he found himself in joint second place after the first round. The second round wasn’t as high-scoring, but Tyler still managed to shoot a solid 1-under-par 71. On the third day, he maintained his consistency with another impressive round of 70. However, as the competition heated up, Tyler slipped down the leaderboard in the final round, despite shooting another 71. Nevertheless, his overall score of 8-under-par is truly remarkable, especially considering he was up against the best amateurs in the world. Tyler’s performance also earned him the title of the top scoring Englishman, finishing five shots ahead of his compatriots. On the European leaderboard, he secured a joint 9th position, and his contribution helped the England team finish tied 15th with Germany in the team trophy. What an achievement! Moving on to Thetford Golf Club, where the Ladies Captain Vicki Smith took on the Ladies Vice Captain Janet Dickson in the annual challenge. Unfortunately, the weather had other plans, and the course was drenched following Storm Babet. Despite the rain, the captains decided to call off this year’s challenge after the 5th hole. However, spirits were high, and the ladies enjoyed the day with laughter and camaraderie in the clubhouse. The following day, the Millennium Challenge took place under much brighter skies. This exciting event pitted the ladies against the men in a battle for the Claret Jug. The format was Greensomes Stableford, with the top four best cards from both teams contributing to the final score. The Men’s captain’s team, led by Jason Huggins, emerged as clear winners with 142 Stableford points, while the ladies’ team scored 130 points. The men successfully retained the trophy, and the day concluded with a delicious meal and plenty of banter in the clubhouse. Over at Bury St Edmunds Golf Club, the weather played spoilsport for the Ladies Captain/Men’s Vice Captain challenge play-off. However, the Junior’s President’s Day took place on a fairer Sunday. The juniors showcased their skills in an 18-hole Stableford event, with Justin Clarke stealing the show by shooting an impressive 81 gross from his 17 handicap, earning him 44 points. In the Junior Development Programme’s 9-hole Texas Scramble, Oliver Alderton, Charlotte Whiting, and Ben Bryant emerged as the winning team. Despite not having a handicap yet, they navigated the course with a gross score of 38. Lastly, the Senior Men’s section bid farewell to their captain, Norman Salmon, with the Captain’s Last Hoorah. A total of 55 players participated, and the scoring was off the charts. In a close battle, Mark Graham claimed first place with 42 points, while Kevin Wells and Norman Salmon tied for second place, with Kevin ultimately securing the runner-up spot. Norman, despite it being his shindig, graciously settled for third place. What a fantastic year it has been for Norman as the seniors captain! That wraps up this week’s golfing highlights.
