Hey hockey fans! Exciting news for all you Calgary Flames supporters out there. The United by Hockey Mobile Museum is heading to Calgary on November 1, 2023. This awesome mobile experience is all about celebrating the incredible diversity in hockey. Last season, the museum traveled over 15,000 miles across North America, attracting more than 20,000 fans. And now, it’s coming to our very own city!
The United by Hockey Mobile Museum is not your average museum. It’s a unique and immersive experience that showcases the trailblazers, changemakers, and business leaders who have made a significant impact on the game. With 840 square feet of history, this mobile museum is packed with exclusive artifacts from players of diverse backgrounds.
But that’s not all! The museum also features video components that give you a glimpse into the next generation of hockey stars, NHL officials, broadcasters, and women in the game. It’s a fantastic opportunity to learn about the rich history of hockey and the incredible people who have shaped the sport.
So, mark your calendars for November 1, 2023, because that’s when the United by Hockey Mobile Museum will be open to the public. But if you can’t wait that long, there’s a sneak-a-peek event earlier in the day from 1:30-3:30 p.m. for media and community groups. You can even register for it!
And here’s something really cool. Rebecca Johnston, a three-time Winter Olympics gold medalist and player development/grassroots hockey coordinator for the Calgary Flames, will be there from 2:00-3:00 p.m. to sign autographs. How awesome is that?
If you’re a Flames fan, you’re in luck! The museum will be open for general admission from 4:30-6:30 p.m. before the Flames game against the Dallas Stars at 6:30 p.m. It’s the perfect way to get pumped up for the game and immerse yourself in the world of hockey.
But don’t worry if you can’t make it on November 1. The museum will also be open on November 3 from 3:00-7:00 p.m. for members of the public and Flames ticket holders. So, there’s plenty of time to check it out!
And guess what? The best part is that the exhibit is completely free to visit. You can find it on the West Tarmac at the Scotiabank Saddledome. It’s a must-visit for any hockey fan!
This season, the United by Hockey Mobile Museum has added some exciting new components. One of them is a virtual reality (VR) experience that allows you to step into the sled of Team USA paralympic gold medalist Malik Jones. You’ll get a firsthand look at his incredible journey through the world of sled hockey. It’s an immersive experience that will bring you closer to the action and emotions of this unique form of the game.
Another new addition is the adaptive hockey display. This display celebrates and explores the different disciplines of hockey, including blind hockey, deaf/hard of hearing hockey, sled hockey, special hockey, and standing/amputee hockey. It’s a fantastic opportunity to learn about the adaptations and modifications that make hockey accessible to players of all abilities.
And here’s something really cool. Dean Barnes, a passionate hockey card collector and educator, has provided over 100 hockey cards for the United by Hockey Mobile Museum. This season, he’s taking it a step further with his newest project called “My Hockey Hero.” It’s a collection of podcasts where Barnes interviews the players featured in his card collection. You can scan a QR code and listen to interviews with players like Tony McKegney, Anthony Stewart, Devante Smith-Pelly, Willie O’Ree, and many more. It’s a unique opportunity to hear their personal hockey stories.
The United by Hockey Mobile Museum also features profiles of some incredible individuals. You’ll learn about 2023 Stanley Cup Champion Zach Whitecloud, who plays for the Vegas Golden Knights. And did you know that Mike Grier, the first Black general manager in the NHL, used to play for the San Jose Sharks? You’ll also get to know David Amber, the host of Hockey Night in Canada, and Arda Ocal, a TV host and personality from ESPN. And let’s not forget about Caroline Oulette, a four-time Olympic gold medalist from Team Canada, and Bridgette Lacquette, Team Canada’s first First Nations player. Last but not least, you’ll discover Josh Pauls, a four-time Paralympic gold medalist and five-time World Champion from Team USA.
