Catamounts Triumph over Wildcats in Epic Hockey Showdown

The UVM women’s ice hockey team had an epic battle with their rivals, the University of New Hampshire Wildcats, and came out on top in back-to-back games at Gutterson Fieldhouse over the weekend. This impressive victory moved them up to the No. 2 spot in the Hockey East division standings. It was a thrilling showdown that kept fans on the edge of their seats.

On Friday Oct. 27, the game got off to an intense start as the Wildcats scored the first goal just six minutes into the first period. But the Catamounts didn’t let that deter them. In the final minute of the period, first-year forward Rose Marie Brochu scored her second goal in as many weeks, bringing the score to a tie.

The game continued to be a back-and-forth battle, with both teams taking turns in the lead. UNH managed to take the advantage early in the second period, but senior forward Natálie Mlýnková quickly responded with a powerful wrist shot to even the score. The Wildcats didn’t back down and regained the lead, but Mlýnková once again showed her skill by scoring another game-tying goal.

The third period was where the Catamounts truly shined. They stunned the Wildcats by scoring two quick goals, with junior forward Alaina Tanksi delivering the go-ahead shot and Mlýnková securing herself a hat trick. Grad student forward Hailey Burns sealed the deal with a goal, and the Catamounts emerged victorious.

The second night of the weekend brought a different script for the Catamounts. Both teams showcased their strong defense, and it was a tight game heading into the third period. Senior goalie Jessie McPherson made some incredible saves, totaling 22 for the night.

Mlýnková continued her impressive performance by breaking through the defense and scoring a beautiful goal in the top right corner of the net. UNH fought back and tied the game, but McPherson made a game-altering save to keep the score even. In overtime, it was Mlýnková’s shot that couldn’t find the net, but junior forward Evelyne Blais-Savoie came through with the game-winning goal, securing the victory for Vermont.

With this win, the Catamounts are now ranked No. 12 in the nation and are ready to take on the Boston College Eagles in two weeks. The Gutterson Fieldhouse will be buzzing with excitement as these two teams face off in a division showdown on Friday Nov. 10 and Saturday Nov. 11. It’s bound to be another thrilling game that fans won’t want to miss!
