The Lido, located in Rome, Wisconsin, is a resort golf course designed by Tom Doak in 2023. It is known for its strategic layout and challenging features. The fairways and greens are covered in firm, fast-running fescue, which adds to the difficulty of the course. The undulating fairways create unpredictable bounces, and recovery shots require creativity. The wide fairways offer different challenges depending on the angle of the tee shot. The Lido is a faithful interpretation of a course that was originally planned by C.B. Macdonald in 1914, with contributions from other notable designers. The 15th hole, named Strategy, was designed by Tom Simpson, and the 18th hole, my personal favorite, was designed by Alister MacKenzie. The Lido opened in 1917 but was unfortunately closed in the 1940s. However, it has now been recreated by Michael and Chris Keiser, adjacent to their Sand Valley Resort. The new course was meticulously modeled using vintage photos of the original Lido, thanks to the efforts of Peter Flory. Tom Doak and Brian Schneider were hired to build the course, ensuring that the green contours were just right. The Lido features large greens, averaging over 12,000 square feet, and includes iconic template holes like the Alps 10th and the Redan 16th. Panelist Clyde Johnson describes the Lido as the ultimate IQ test for golf-course architecture. It is truly a remarkable design and a welcome addition to the golfing world.
