The Union College field hockey team had an impressive victory over Smith College, securing their 10th win of the season. First-years Maddie Greco and Rachel Ostiguy played a crucial role in the team’s success, contributing three goals and two assists combined.
Greco, in particular, has been outstanding in her rookie season, scoring two more goals in this game and bringing her total to 12 for the year. She is just one goal away from entering the school’s top-10 single-season record. Ostiguy also had a stellar performance, earning a goal and two assists, marking her third four-point game of the season.
The Garnet Chargers faced some challenges as they saw their one-goal leads disappear twice in less than a minute during the first two quarters. However, Ostiguy managed to give Union the lead again in the final 30 seconds of the third period, and Greco sealed the victory with two goals in the fourth quarter.
The scoring started in the second period when Union executed a penalty corner perfectly. Megan Dorsey passed the ball to Grace Goddard, who took a shot that was skillfully deflected by Ostiguy to Grace Krebs, who tapped it in for a goal. Goddard later scored her fifth goal of the season, giving Union the lead once again.
In the final minute of the third period, Sophie Ruhl took a shot that was deflected by Ostiguy, resulting in her seventh goal of the season and giving the Garnet Chargers the lead. Greco then took charge in the fourth quarter, scoring two goals in just over two minutes to extend Union’s lead to 5-2.
The Union College team dominated the game, outshooting Smith College with a 17-7 advantage. Goalkeeper Sophie Brady made three saves to secure the victory.
Looking ahead, Union aims to finish the regular season strong with a match against Keene State College on Saturday at 2 p.m.
