The UTRGV Vaqueros men’s basketball team kicked off the 2023-24 season with a bang, securing a resounding 110-59 victory over the Southwestern Adventist University Knights. Junior standout Daylen Williams led the charge for the Vaqueros, delivering a career-high performance. He contributed 20 points, shooting an impressive 8-of-9 from the field. Williams also showcased his versatility, adding nine rebounds, four assists, and an outstanding five steals to his stat line. Graduate student DeAnthony Tipler Jr. also made his presence felt, scoring 17 points and matching Williams’ five steals.
The Vaqueros received contributions from multiple players, highlighting their depth and talent. Hasan Abdul-Hakim, Elijah Elliott, and C.J. Jackson each made significant contributions, combining for 41 points, 21 rebounds, 11 assists, and six steals.
The Knights initially took a brief lead in the opening minutes, but the Vaqueros quickly responded. Williams and Tipler ignited a 10-0 run with back-to-back three-pointers, propelling the Vaqueros to a 14-5 advantage.
As the first half progressed, the Vaqueros continued to dominate. They embarked on a 13-0 run, stifling the Knights’ offense and forcing turnovers. By halftime, the Vaqueros had established a commanding 48-18 lead.
The second half witnessed the Vaqueros’ relentless pursuit of victory. They opened with a 14-2 run, extending their lead to an astonishing 50 points. The team’s offensive firepower was on full display, with Elliott sinking a three-pointer to make the score 82-32.
The Vaqueros maintained their intensity throughout the game, never letting up on their opponents. They reached their largest lead of 54 points, with the scoreboard reading 93-39 in their favor.
