The University of Victoria’s field hockey team just won their fifth-straight national title, and they did it in style! They shut out the University of Toronto 3-0 in the U SPORTS championship in Toronto on Sunday (Nov. 5).
Amanda Adams scored the first goal for UVic just over a minute into the deciding third game against the Varsity Blues. The Vikes started off the best-of-three series with a shootout win, then followed it up with a 1-0 victory in game two.
Julia Boraston added another goal for the Vikes, scoring off a corner opportunity before three minutes had even passed. It was a big moment for her, marking her first goal of the year, and she was also named player of the game. The UVic women weren’t done yet, as Josie Dunham netted the third and final goal of the final before halftime.
The Vikes’ defence, led by goalkeeper Anais Chance, kept Toronto off the scoreboard in the final, securing two consecutive shutouts after dropping the first game. Libby Hobb, a former Oak Bay High student, was named the MVP of the national championship.
Head coach Krista Thompson credited the victory to the team’s attention to detail. “Our players went out there and took care of the little things quite early. We never really talked about winning,” she said. “I would say they saved their best game for this last game, and I am incredibly proud of this young group of athletes.”
This win marks the 16th field hockey national title for the Vikes program, and it’s a huge achievement for the team!
