The Fairmont Area girls hockey team is gearing up for the start of their 2023-24 season. After finishing last season with a record of 4-17-3, head coach Eric Householder shared his goals for the team and himself during the offseason. He emphasized the importance of being a cohesive team both on and off the ice, expressing the desire for improvement and a strong work ethic from the players. With a smaller roster this year, the team anticipates a learning experience due to the absence of key players who graduated last spring.
Despite the challenges, the team is looking to senior forward Bella Larson to take on a more significant offensive role, especially with the departure of key contributors from the previous season. Bella, who was the leading scorer last season with 11 goals and four assists, will receive support from fellow senior forward Karissa Newville, who contributed five goals and five assists as the team’s third leading scorer. Additionally, Karissa’s freshman sister, Bella Newville, will join the team as a defenseman, adding a familial dynamic to the roster.
Coach Householder noted the improvement in speed and stick-handling skills of the players, particularly highlighting Karissa Newville’s progress. He expressed satisfaction with the team’s attitudes and mentality, indicating a positive outlook for the upcoming season.
In a unique twist, the Newville sisters will be joined by their father, Josh Newville, who has taken on the role of assistant coach alongside Householder. With the loss of key players, the team will rely on its six seniors to lead and guide the rest of the team, especially with a smaller lineup and only one goalie.
Junior Ilana Moeller will step into the role of goalkeeper for the Cardinals this season, following her performance as a sophomore. With an increased workload, Moeller will be crucial to the team’s defensive efforts. Additionally, the return of junior Charli Clow, who is rejoining the sport after a hiatus, adds a new dimension to the team as she takes on the forward position.
The season opener is set for Friday at the Martin County Arena, where the Cardinals will face Mankato West in a nonconference game at 7 p.m. The team is eager to kick off the season and showcase their skills on the ice.
