Fuel Assistance Expanded for 1.6 Million Workers

Good news for 1.6 million drivers! The government is expanding the fuel assistance to include more workers. This means an extra 1.6 million workers will now be eligible for the 100 euro fuel assistance. The decision to expand the assistance was made as part of the 2024 government budget, following a request from the Liot group and Horizons MPs.

The fuel assistance of 100 euros, which was introduced in 2024, is being extended. Initially, only 50% of workers who use their personal vehicles to commute to and from work were eligible. Now, that number has increased to 60%, and this assistance will be paid out in 2024.

This decision was included in the state budget for the year 2024. It was approved in the late evening of Tuesday, November 7th, through Article 49.3, with a measure proposed by the independent Liot group and Horizons MPs.

The request to expand the fuel assistance came from the authors of the measure. As a result, an additional 1.6 million beneficiaries will now be able to claim the assistance, increasing the total cost of this measure to a whopping 600 million euros.

The expanded fuel assistance is not yet adopted. In 2024, a single person must not earn more than 1,600 euros net to be eligible, while this amount increases to 4,800 euros for a couple with two children.

However, the text still needs to be adopted. For this to happen, the motion of censure filed by La France Insoumise (FLI) following the government’s 49.3 must fail. The Senate will then take up the text in a session on November 23rd, confirming the implementation of this expanded assistance.

A tiny boost
It’s worth noting that Emmanuel Macron announced the implementation of this assistance on September 24th. The pressure from citizens due to the high fuel prices was too much. To benefit from this assistance, one must apply for it on the tax office website and declare on oath that they use their vehicle to commute to work.

This assistance, however, remains confidential. The reduction is estimated to be “one cent of petrol over six months if you drive your vehicle and cover 1,000 kilometers per month,” according to Mathieu Plane, an economist at OFCE, as cited by TF1. It’s a very specific, very limited assistance that doesn’t radically change things.
