Livingston County is home to some of the best high school hockey players in Michigan. With the 2023-24 season on the horizon, the anticipation is high as three returning all-state players and several other talented athletes are gearing up for what promises to be an exciting season.
Before the official preseason list is revealed, Livingston Daily readers have the chance to vote for their preseason Player of the Year. The voting is open until 4 p.m. Tuesday, so don’t miss the opportunity to have your say.

Here are some of the standout players to consider:
1. Cam Duffany, Brighton
Duffany’s impressive performance last season earned him first-team all-state honours. With 29 goals and 29 assists in 30 games, he’s definitely one to watch.
2. Joel Eskola, Howell
As Howell’s top returning scorer, Eskola’s 14 goals and 20 assists in 27 games make him a strong contender for Player of the Year.
3. Ian Kastamo, Hartland
Kastamo’s winning goal in the 2022 state Division 2 championship game as a freshman set the stage for his promising career. With nine goals and 24 assists in 29 games as a sophomore, he’s a player with great potential.
4. Cade Katlin, Howell
In his first season of high school hockey, Katlin made an impact as Howell’s No. 3 scorer with 11 goals and 14 assists in 24 games.
5. Levi Pennala, Brighton
Pennala, a senior goalie, has been a key player for Brighton, earning first-team all-state honours twice. With an impressive record, he’s a force to be reckoned with.
6. Lane Petit, Brighton
Petit’s outstanding performance last year, with 30 goals and 17 assists in 29 games, makes him a strong candidate for Player of the Year.
7. Chad Pietila, Howell
A Pietila is a familiar name in Livingston County hockey, and Chad is no exception. His contribution to the team as a defenseman is noteworthy.
8. Eli Sturos, Hartland
Sturos’ impressive performance as a defenseman last year earned him a spot on the state’s all-freshman team. With four goals and 16 assists in 26 games, he’s a rising star.
