The Michigan Tech women’s basketball team showed their strength in numbers with a fantastic 83-64 win over Lewis on Saturday night. The game saw six players scoring in double figures, marking a successful start to the season for the Huskies. Head coach Sam Clayton expressed his pride in the team’s performance, highlighting the confidence and urgency displayed by the players. Tessa and Emma particularly stood out, playing with remarkable confidence and contributing significantly to the team’s victory.
The win propelled the Huskies to a 2-0 start, while Lewis faced their second loss of the season. Michigan Tech’s impressive shooting performance, with a 51.7% field goal percentage, and an average of over 20 points per quarter, demonstrated their dominance on the court. Notably, the team secured 26 points from the bench, with Emma Anderson and Tessa Leece achieving career-high scores. Anderson’s 12 points, including two successful long-range shots, and Leece’s 10 points further solidified the team’s victory.
The game began with a close battle between the two teams, but the Huskies’ exceptional shooting prowess became evident by halftime, leading with a score of 41-30. Their remarkable performance included seven successful three-pointers and a perfect 8-for-8 free throw record. The third quarter witnessed the Huskies extending their lead, outscoring the Flyers 22-12, with key contributions from veterans Sara Dax, Katelyn Meister, and Alex Rondorf.
Although the Flyers displayed resilience in the final quarter, the Huskies maintained their lead, ultimately securing the win. Rondorf and Wypych led the scoring for the Huskies with 14 points each, supported by strong performances from Anderson, Leece, Isabella Lenz, and Meister, who all achieved double-digit scores. The Huskies also dominated the rebound battle, outperforming the Flyers with a 39-28 margin.
Looking ahead, Michigan Tech is set to continue their nonconference schedule, with upcoming matches against Southwest Minnesota State and defending national champions Ashland.
