The Colorado Buffaloes women’s basketball team has made a huge leap in the rankings, now sitting at No. 5 in the latest AP poll. This remarkable rise of 15 spots is the biggest in AP poll history for the Buffs, who have climbed from No. 20. This achievement marks the highest ranking for CU since the 1994-95 season when they secured the 2nd position.
Head coach JR Payne expressed her gratitude for the recognition, stating, “We are very honoured to be ranked in the top 5 and appreciate the voter’s confidence in us. I’m most proud that while it’s very exciting, our team will just continue to work in the exact same fashion we always do and that’s trying to be excellent today. Our belief in striving for daily excellence is how we end up in the position that we are. Excited to keep growing and keep getting better.”
The CU Lady Buffs have kicked off the 2023-24 regular season with an impressive 3-0 record, including a stunning upset against the defending national champions, previously No. 1 LSU, in a 92-78 victory. They continued their winning streak with an 86-75 defeat of Oklahoma State on Nov. 12.
Key players for the CU Lady Buffs include Jaylyn Sherrod, who ranks No. 5 in assists, Aaronette Vonleh, who holds the No. 9 spot in field goals made, and Frida Formann, sitting at No. 4 in 3-pointers made.
The Buffs are among the top 10 teams in the PAC-12, with five schools from the conference securing spots in the rankings. They are now gearing up to face the SMU Mustangs on Nov. 18 in Dallas.
