Honouring a Hockey Legend: The Paul Dossey Memorial Tournament

hockey fans! Get ready for an action-packed weekend as the South Simcoe Minor Hockey Association’s annual tournament hits the ice under a new name – the Paul Dossey Memorial Tournament. This exciting event is set to honor the late Paul Dossey, a true legend in the hockey world. For over 15 years, this tournament has been a platform for minor teams from all across Ontario to battle it out and show off their skills. From U10 to U18, in A, AA, and BB categories, teams will be facing off at three awesome facilities: the BWG Leisure Centre, the Bob Fallis Sports Centre, and the Nottawasaga Inn Resort — Centre Ice Sportsplex. The games kick off at 10 a.m. on Nov. 17, coinciding with Dossey’s birthday – a fitting tribute to his legacy. The tournament is not just about the sport; it’s a living memorial to Dossey, who played a pivotal role in shaping the hockey landscape in Bradford and the Southern Simcoe region. The opening ceremony is set to take place at 9:45 a.m. on Friday at the BWG Leisure Centre, where the former Blue Rink will be officially renamed to the Paul Dossey Rink. These changes are a heartfelt recognition of Dossey’s contributions as a player, coach, volunteer, and president of the Bradford West Gwillimbury Minor Hockey Association. He was truly a local hero, earning the town’s Lifetime Sports Builder Award in 2020. Dossey’s dedication to the sport earned him the nickname “Mr. Hockey,” and his impact on the lives of local hockey players will be felt for years to come. Mayor James Leduc emphasized Dossey’s instrumental role in the successful formation of the new South Simcoe Minor Hockey Association, ensuring a bright future for youth hockey. Dossey’s passion for hockey began at a young age, and he brought that passion to Bradford, where he made significant contributions to the local hockey community. His efforts led to the construction of the Bob Fallis Sports Complex, which doubled ice availability in the community and provided more opportunities for young players. Dossey’s vision for hockey development encouraged players at all levels to enjoy the game and develop their skills. This weekend’s tournament is open to all spectators, and you can find the full schedule online at sites.google.com/view/southsimcoe23-11-17/schedules-results.
