Many nations have implemented stringent measures to address traffic violations, particularly the most severe infractions. These measures encompass the imposition of fines and the confiscation of offenders’ vehicles. However, Latvia has adopted a distinctive approach to addressing serious traffic violations. In lieu of only imposing penalties, Latvia seizes the vehicles of offenders and dispatches them to Ukraine in support of the Ukrainian army’s conflict with Russia. This initiative, endorsed by the Latvian coalition government, is designed to aid Ukraine in its struggle against aggressive actions.
The confiscated vehicles belong to drivers who have been found to have a blood alcohol level exceeding 1.5 per mil. These individuals represent a significant threat on the roads and pose a grave danger to other motorists. Initial reports suggest that Latvia intends to transfer a newly acquired set of vehicles, valued at 37,850 euros, to Ukraine following their confiscation from intoxicated drivers.
