Aryna Sabalenka and Elena Rybakina Set to Spark Rivalry at Brisbane International

Aryna Sabalenka, who currently holds the second position in the world rankings, is set to commence her 2024 Australian season at the Brisbane International, as she prepares to defend her title at the Australian Open. Also in attendance will be Elena Rybakina, the fourth-ranked player globally and the runner-up to Sabalenka in the Australian Open final earlier this year. Cam Pearson, the tournament director, expressed his eagerness to welcome both players to the Brisbane International, reflecting on the captivating Australian Open final they contested earlier this year and emphasizing the budding rivalry between them. This announcement coincides with the return of Naomi Osaka, a four-time Grand Slam champion, to tennis, thus further enriching the star-studded line-up at the Brisbane International.

On the men’s side, the rapidly ascending world number 17, Ben Shelton from the United States, and the three-time Grand Slam victor Andy Murray, are slated to compete in Brisbane. There is also the potential participation of Australian Nick Kyrgios, provided that he recuperates from his injury in a timely manner. Pearson expressed his enthusiasm for the possibility of Kyrgios’ involvement, acknowledging him as a past champion and a crowd favourite, whilst also emphasizing the importance of prioritising Kyrgios’ recovery.
