The girls’ basketball team of Des Lacs-Burlington Lakers is currently in the process of adjusting to the new landscape of three-class basketball, a transition that many teams in North Dakota are also facing. Head coach Tracy Bonn has openly acknowledged the challenges that come with this change in classification and the uncertainty of matching up with other teams. However, Bonn remains resolute in setting the team’s sights on a state tournament berth, emphasizing that it is always attainable at the beginning of the season.
Competing in Region 3 without subdivisions in Class A, the Lakers are preparing for a season of competitive play alongside formidable opponents such as Bottineau, Des Lacs-Burlington, Dunseith, Nedrose, New Town, Rugby, South Prairie-Max, Stanley, and Turtle Mountain Community.
With only two seniors lost from the previous season, the Lakers are fortunate to welcome back a group of experienced varsity players, including seniors Paige Berard (5’11”), Katelynn Berg (5’7″), and Zannah Bjerklie (5’10”), whose height was once advantageous in Class B and is now a valuable asset in the team’s arsenal of athleticism. Alongside juniors Ava Brown and Kaylee Werner, who also bring significant playing time, the Lakers are confident in their ability to adapt to the offensive adjustments required by their transition to Class A. This transition may demand a more perimeter-focused approach, but it also presents an opportunity for quicker play and strategic adaptability.
In terms of offensive tactics, the Lakers employ a diverse style, utilizing a combination of sets and a motion-based offense to capitalize on their versatility and athleticism. Additionally, the team recognizes the need for increased discipline in light of the new free throw rules, as they have historically been known for their aggressive defensive play.
Despite the adjustments, the Lakers remain optimistic about their prospects and are determined to contend for a Region title. Their upcoming matches against Beulah and Killdeer will provide early tests to confirm their readiness for the season ahead.
