It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of one of Newark Golf Club’s most beloved members, Walter Hughes. Known as the ‘Grand Old Man’ of the club, Walter was a true stalwart and friend to all. He lived in Long Bennington, Nottinghamshire and was a dedicated member of the club for over four decades.
Walter’s impact on the club was immeasurable. He served as club captain in 1994, joined the board of directors three years later, and eventually became chairman in 1998, a role he held for many years. His leadership and influence were highly respected by all.
Fraser Macintyre, the current president of Newark Golf Club, fondly remembers Walter as a true gentleman who always had the best interests of the club at heart. Whenever advice was needed, Walter was the go-to person. His words carried weight, and his wisdom was invaluable. He will be deeply missed.
Before his retirement from the RAF in 1990, Walter achieved the rank of Group Captain. With his distinguished moustache and charming demeanor, he embodied the image of a dashing pilot. However, he would often joke that his true role was that of a ‘brown bomber’ who flew a desk. His sense of humor was as legendary as his dedication to the club.
In his later years, Walter became an integral part of the Seniors’ Section at Newark Golf Club. Paul Speakman, the section’s secretary, speaks for all the seniors when he says that Walter’s knowledge, wisdom, friendship, and support will be greatly missed.
As we bid farewell to Walter Hughes, we remember him as a true legend of Newark Golf Club. His legacy will live on in the hearts of all who had the privilege of knowing him. Rest in peace, Walter.
