A substantial police operation in Bolton and Wigan this morning resulted in the apprehension of a dozen individuals following violent confrontations that erupted after the Bolton Wanderers-Wigan Athletic match on 19th August 2023. The incidents led to significant disorder involving approximately 50 individuals in Westhoughton.
The Greater Manchester Police (GMP) deployed over 50 officers in a coordinated effort to target more than a dozen addresses. The 12 men, ranging in age from 16 to 58, were detained on suspicion of violent disorder and are presently undergoing questioning while in custody.
Superintendent Danny O’Neil of GMP’s Bolton district issued a statement condemning the pre-planned disorder, emphasizing the importance of ensuring the safety of football fans attending matches. He expressed disappointment that the violence overshadowed a well-planned and well-policed operation between GMP and the two football clubs.
Furthermore, Detective Inspector Tony Lunt of Bolton CID stressed the unacceptable nature of the violence, affirming that decisive action has been taken and that the investigation is still ongoing. Authorities are actively seeking to identify other individuals involved in the violent confrontations and have encouraged anyone with information to come forward.
The police have underscored that individuals with information, dashcam footage, or who were in the vicinity at the time of the incident should get in touch with the police on 0161 856 5757 quoting log 2621-19/08/2023, or report information via www.gmp.police.uk, 101, or anonymously via the independent charity Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
In conclusion, the police have unequivocally stated that acts of violence and disorder at football matches will not be tolerated, and they will seek football banning orders for those found guilty of participating in the violence. The message is clear: there is no place for hooliganism at football matches, and measures will be taken to ensure the safety of fans and the general public.
